Overall Thoughts: Had the most fun with this one : While it has the most limited option for making custom geometry in the software, once you imported geometry it was fast and flexible.Ĭreate two mesh, overlap slightly, union together.

Not really designed for solid modeling, but I thought I’d give it a shot to see what features it has in this area.

I had a hard time with the user interaction.

Over Thoughts: Mixed bag… a weird split of features between the web and computer app.I wish it ran better on my Macbook Air: Lots of crashing/graphics glitching. I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface.

Overall thoughts: The most powerful when it comes to solid model design.The apps compared were Autodesk Fusion 360, Autodesk 123D Design, Tinkercad, & Clara.io My test was done on a Macbook Air, Chrome web browser. I’m not expert at any of these: If any info I’ve presented is wrong, or you know a better way, please comment. While I’m well versed with Autodesk Maya, I’m always interested in other (free) option for more simple things. Likewise any user of the app has the option to share their creations with the autodesk community via Autodesk's built-in sharing functionality.I wanted to compare some standard features needed for creating 3d models in regards to 3D printing.

The 3D models created by Catch can be used in a number of ways such as 3D printing.Ĭatch offers users the ability to view, comment on, rate, and download other users models. Finally after they model is created it is downloaded to the user's device for viewing and editing. Once all of the images are saved they are uploaded to autodesk servers so they can be stitched together and a 3D model can be made. Autodesk recommends taking between 30 and 40 pictures to create a well rounded model but when photographing larger subjects the user can take up to 70 pictures to give greater detail to the model. If the user is trying to create a 3D model of something with complex features they can take close up pictures on those areas to give better definition to the resulting model. To create a 3D model in Catch the user should find a subject that can be easily photographed from many angles in good light. The program is available for Windows, an app exists in the play store for Android, app store for iOS, and Windows Phone store. With the creation of an Autodesk account, users can also export their newly created models to further manipulate in popular 3D modeling software. Catch can be used to create 3D models of people, places, and things. It does this by stitching together the images with common visual structures automatically, then asking the user to help connect points that could not be determined through software. Catch uses photogrammetry technology to create a 3D model out of multiple pictures taken by the user.
